Herman’s Story - w. Prostate Cancer

“I’m Herman and I was diagnosed with prostate cancer seven months ago. While the journey hasn’t been easy, it has given me a new perspective on my body, my priorities, and the importance of early detection.”

My diagnosis

“Hearing the word ‘cancer’ was overwhelming at first. There was fear, uncertainty, and a lot of unanswered questions. At the same time, I felt determined to understand my options and take control of what I could.”

Family history

“Both my father and my grandfather were diagnosed with prostate cancer. Because of that family history, I understood the importance of regular checkups and monitoring. That awareness played a key role in catching my diagnosis when I did.”

What is prostate cancer?

Prostate cancer is a type of cancer that begins in the prostate, a walnut-sized gland that is part of the male reproductive system. Like many types of cancer, prostate cancer can metastasize and spread to other areas of the body.

My biggest concerns

“My biggest concerns are about long-term health and how treatment might affect my ability to remain active and present for my family. I manage those concerns by staying informed, communicating with my doctors, and focusing on what I can control.”

Breaking the stigma

“There is definitely stigma around prostate cancer, especially when it comes to talking about men’s health and vulnerability. I’ve chosen to be open about my diagnosis. Talking about it openly has brought more support than silence ever could.”

Challenges I’ve faced

“One of the greatest challenges has been balancing treatment decisions with maintaining a sense of normalcy. There are physical and mental hurdles, but many of them are manageable with the right support system and mindset.”

Feeling my best

“Staying active has been essential to managing my diagnosis. I remain active in motorsports. I also train and teach Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Keeping my mind sharp and engaged has been just as important as exercise during this journey.”

A typical day

“A typical day involves balancing medical appointments and recovery with maintaining an active lifestyle. I’m more intentional about listening to my body now, but staying active helps me maintain clarity, structure, and a sense of normalcy.”

Finding my purpose

“Drag racing and Brazilian jiu-jitsu continue to give me a strong sense of purpose. Staying involved in these passions has played a major role in supporting my overall wellbeing throughout this experience.”

Building my community

“In addition to support from family, friends, and my medical team, being surrounded by people who value discipline, perseverance, and growth has been a powerful source of motivation.”
