Lucy’s Story - w. Ulcerative Colitis

Hello!

“My name is Lucy Sotelo, I’m a commercial actress and model. I have likely had some form of ulcerative colitis since I was a kid, but I wasn’t officially diagnosed until 2017. I’m a very active individual with a passion for fitness and nutrition.”

My UC diagnosis

“Before I was diagnosed, I thought I had a broken body and that I would forever be living with this mystery pain and illness. It was life changing to find out I had this lifelong disease, it made me feel validated.”

Living with UC

“I was hospitalized for months within my journey, and at some points I was going to the bathroom nearly 100 times a day. But now, after 10 years of research, and trial, and error, I’ve found health and remission.”

What is Ulcerative Colitis?

UC is a chronic condition where the immune system attacks the colon and rectal lining, causing inflammation. Symptoms include cramping, frequent diarrhea, and bloody or mucus-filled stools. Without treatment, it can lead to colon damage and increased colorectal cancer risk.

My biggest concerns

“My day-to-day concern is knowing there will be a bathroom everywhere I go. But my biggest concerns are that UC increases the risk of colon cancer, or that I might have other long-term health complications.”

Breaking the stigma

“So many stigmas! UC is an invisible illness, and you feel like you’re always convincing everyone that you’re actually suffering. And it feels like a taboo to talk about using the bathroom, so talking about symptoms feels like an overshare.”

Challenges I’ve faced

“For years I was flaring and it dictated every second of my life. I couldn’t go anywhere without anxiety over the bathroom or food. I don’t struggle with these things as much, but they will always be there on some level.”

Feeling my best

“Movement has been the biggest thing for me. I do Barre, yoga, meditation and belly dance to help keep me connected with my body and also keep my mental health on a good level even when my physical health isn’t.”

A typical day

“I have to make adjustments. No coffee but opting for tea. Preparing all of my meals at home. Scheduling time to rest. And of course, needing to be close to home or close to a bathroom at all times of day.”

Building my community

“I’ve been fortunate to meet a ton of people via Facebook groups and Instagram that have been instrumental in helping me feel like I’m not going through this alone. Finding a community of people that “get it” means everything.”

Words of Wisdom

“TRUST YOUR GUT! Even though your gut is the thing giving you hell, it’s also a second brain. There are so many differing opinions from people about UC, but only you know what is right for you. Be your own advocate!”
